This paper explores the potential of applying Genetic Algorithms to land use planning, a spatial allocation problem. Two genotype representations are proposed: a fixed-length genotype composed of genes that map directly to a land parcel's use, and a variable-length, order-dependent representation making allocations indirectly via a greedy algorithm. The fixed-length genotype is used within a standard genetic algorithm framework but the variable-length genotype requires novel breeding operators to be defined and post-processing of the genotype structure to identify and remove duplicate genotypes. The two approaches are compared on a real land use planning problem and the strengths and weaknesses of each approach are identified.

متن کاملApplying Genetic Algorithms to Multi-Objective Land Use Planning
This paper explores the application of multiobjective Genetic Algorithms (mGAs) to rural land use planning, a spatial allocation problem. Two mGAs are proposed. Both share an underlying structure of: fitness assignment using Pareto-dominance ranking, niche induction and an individual replacement strategy. They are differentiated by their representations: a fixedlength genotype composed of genes...
متن کاملApplying the Land Use-Transportation Integrated Model, Using the Most Effective Sustainable Urban Variables Case study: part of the district 22 of city of Tehran
Land use planning is the main core of urban planning and one of the main components of an urban system. This element has close relation with transportation system of the city, so if their interaction becomes insufficient, deterioration and chaos would have an adverse impact on the urban system and would cause serious environmental issues. The integrated land use-transportation models seem to b...

In this paper, Landscape Allocation using Genetic Algorithm (LAGA), a spatial multi-objective land use optimization software is introduced. The software helps in searching for optimal land use when multiple objectives such as suitability, area, cohesion and edge density indices are simultaneously involved. LAGA is a flexible and easy to use genetic algorithm-based software for optimizing the sp...

Introduction Land use reflects the interactive characteristics of humans and the environment and describes how human exploitation works for one or more targets on the ground. Land use is usually defined on the basis of human use of the land, with an emphasis on the functional role of land in economic activities. Land use, which is associated with human activity, is undergoing change over time....
